Abstract
The article presents the results of the study of parents’ view of child’s functional role. The author suggests that family hierarchy plays a significant role in differentiating child’s role. A childcentered family has an inversion family hierarchy with a child at its top, while a traditional family has a traditional family hierarchy headed by parents. The technique Social Family Roles by E. N. Vasilyeva, A. М. Orlova has been used. The study has found that in a child-centered family there are three functional child’s roles: “child – intermediary of parent’s self-realization”, “child – object of love, nurturing, and care”, “child – provider of feelings as a resource for parents”. These roles are differentiated by the repertoire of prioritized functions of a child. They depend on child’s gender, birth order, and whether it is a full or single-parent family.
