The Relationship between Development of Emotional Intelligence and Activity of Using Social Media in Adolescence

Abstract

The current problem of the impact of using innovative technologies on development of human mental functions has determined the purpose of the empirical research presented in this paper: to study the relationship between emotional intelligence and activity of using social media in adolescence. The sample group consisted of 50 female students. The sample group average age was 20.2. The research applied: 1) The Emotional Intelligence Evaluation Technique by Nicholas Hall 2) The Cyber-Communication Addiction Questionnaire by A.V. Toncheva's. The analysis of calculation of the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient showed that there was no significant association between indicators of social media engagement and indicators of emotional intelligence components: emotional awareness; self-regulation; motivation; empathy; social skills and integrative indicator. The obtained results will become the basis for further study of the potential of innovative communication technologies and their use for developmental, educational and correctional purposes.
