The Problem of Visualization: Development and Current Situation

Abstract
The paper is concerned with different approaches to the problem of visualization based on the combination of the results of theoretical and experimental research. According to many researchers the problem is a critical aspect of psychological knowledge it is a pivotal one in solving basic psychological problems – a psychophysical and psychophysiological ones. While a psychophysiological problem is coming close to being solved, a psychophysical one remains at the relatively same level as a century and a half ago, when formulated by G. T. Fechner. Modern psychophysicists are trying to solve a contradiction between Weber-Fechner and Stevens’s power laws rather than try to model the process of visualization itself. It is an opportune time to move from analyzing experimental data collected in this area to developing new knowledge taking into account strengths of proposed theoretical concepts and free from their shortcomings.
