Рассматривается социокультурная модель становления образа тела, включающая такие факторы, как принадлежность к определенной группе (этнической, социальной, профессиональной) и влияние соответствующих стереотипов; семейные факторы (родительское моделирование, послания и установки, вербальная и невербальная обратная связь в адрес детей от родителей и сиблингов, первичная привязанность); позиция сверстников (комментарии о внешности, насмешки, противостояние эталонам СМИ или их поддержка); информационное пространство – СМИ и Интернет (общение в социальных сетях, просмотр изображений тела, эталон ультрастройного тела, видеопродукция, мультфильмы и т. п.). Для каждой группы факторов описаны результаты исследований, проводимых на различных выборках. Показано влияние на образ тела отдельных факторов, а также возможное их взаимодействие, например, за счет такого феномена, как «буферизация».
