The paper deals with the phenomenon of economic identity of an entrepreneur viewed from a meta-system approach. The system of economic identity of an entrepreneur has been ranked as a specific complex system with a built in meta-level. The meta-level is seen as a unity of personal, socio-economic, and object-activity meta-systems, which includes the system of economic identity of an entrepreneur. This system comprises the five basic macro-levels being hierarchically arranged: meta-systemic, systemic, sub-systemic, componental, and elemental. A pilot study has been carried out on the sample of 78 small business entrepreneurs using questionnaires and standardized techniques. The empirical study focused on the sub-system level, being sensitive to the content and structure of the system of economic identity of an entrepreneur, and reflects specific features of the levels above and below it. In the course of the pilot study twelve sub-systems were identified, which have been described in details in the paper. They cover all subjective attributes of economic identification of the system of economic identity of an entrepreneur.
