Abstract

The paper analyzes the factors underlying the development of body image in adolescence: family predictors, social and cultural patterns, relations with peers and intimate partners, the media and the Internet. The results of the empirical study of the group of girls aged between 18 and 20 showed dependence of girls’ body image on the feedback from their parents and interrelation of girls’ body image with characterization of their eating behaviors. The study showed that the Russian girls were generally disgruntled at their appearance, which was proved by the survey of many samples around the world. Retrospective assessment of the feedback from parents received in adolescence is an important factor for girls affecting the level of acceptance of their own body. The feedback from an intimate partner plays an important role in the development of body image in adolescence as well.
