Focus of Methodological Works of Bulgarian Psychologists during World War II

Author(s)
M. D. Nyagolova
Abstract

The paper deals with basic issues that Bulgarian psychologists paid their attention to at the time of the Second World War. Nature of philosophic tools of scientific knowledge used has been considered. The author made the case for the importance of its culturological and historiographical orientation. Main areas of psychology development during the war have been identified. During World War II Bulgarian psychologists succeeded in dealing with both theoretical and applied issues. War time stimulated scientific interest in psychology. Liberal democratic views and humanistic vision defined the ideology of the academia. The psychological and psychoanalytical communities openly expressed their antifascist feeling, advocated political and scientific democracy, opposed anti-Semitism and racism. Almost all Bulgarian psychologists were fluent in German and Russian. Many got their training in Germany and at the same time appreciated the achievements of the philosophy and psychology in Russia. On the one hand, the war negatively affected the development of the science in the country, but on the other hand, while experiencing an impact of the social and economic crisis it was during that period that Bulgarian scientists were able to make a meaningful contribution to the development of psychological science.
